Amos 7:7-10 The Plumb Line

Is Jesus the plumb line for Israel? Is it where the vertical and horizontal meet to form the Cross of Jesus Christ? No one comes to the Father except through Him.

Amos 7:7-10

7 Thus He showed me: Behold, the Lord stood on a wall made with a plumb line, with a plumb line in His hand. 8 And the Lord said to me, “Amos, what do you see?” And I said, “A plumb line.” Then the Lord said: “Behold, I am setting a plumb line In the midst of My people Israel; I will not pass by them anymore. 9 The high places of Isaac shall be desolate, And the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste. I will rise with the sword against the house of Jeroboam.” The New v

Romans 6:8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, 9 knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him. 10 For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. 11 Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

From death and resurrection comes a new and abundant life in Christ Jesus.

1 Thessalonians 5:8 But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation. 9 For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 who died for us, that whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him. 11 Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing.

A plumb line is a string with a weight tied to one end, used to establish a vertical line so that a wall can be built straight.

God asked Amos what he saw, then explained the vision’s meaning. Unlike the first two visions, God did not give Amos opportunity to intercede, nor did He relent. These judgments would be executed. The plumb line of God’s revelation in the law had been set in the midst of … Israel for many generations. Now God would stretch a plumb line to demonstrate how “crooked” the people’s observance of His commands had been. The high places refer to temples, groves, and other shrines dedicated mostly to pagan deities.

Isaac, the father of Jacob, represented all Israel in Amos’s day. The NKJV Study Bible

The Lord has many ways of humbling a sinful nation. Whatever trouble we are under, we should be most earnest with God for the forgiveness of sin. Sin will soon make a great people small. What will become of Israel, if the hand that should raise him be stretched out against him? See the power of prayer. See what a blessing praying people are to a land. See how ready, how swift God is to show mercy; how he waits to be gracious. Israel was a wall, a strong wall, which God himself reared as a defence to his sanctuary. The Lord now seems to stand upon this wall. He measures it; it appears to be a bowing, bulging wall. Thus God would bring the people of Israel to the trial, would discover their wickedness; and the time will come, when those who have been spared often, shall be spared no longer. But the Lord still calls Israel his people. The repeated prayer and success of the prophet should lead us to seek the Saviour. Matthew Henry’s Concise Commentary

…remember these truths about the Holy Spirit for those who are Christ followers:

The Holy Spirit will help you (John 14:16;  John 16:7).

The Holy Spirit will convict you (John 16:8).

The Holy Spirit will guide you (John 16:13).

The Holy Spirit will dwell in you (John 14:17).

The Holy Spirit will teach you (John 14:26).

  • The Holy Spirit will intercede in prayer for you (Romans 8:26). First 5

Edward Everett Hale’s reminder, “I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do.”

So. Let us be a blessing. Be a friend. Encourage someone. Take time to care. And let our words heal and not wound. Sabbath Moments
