Job 12:13-25

God always has the last word. Jesus is the word made flesh…His final gift to mankind!

In times like these the prudent remain silent.

Job describes the scope of God’s power. He points out God’s wisdom and says no one can change God’s work. He speaks of God’s supremacy over several areas: the weather, earthly leaders and authorities, light and darkness, and the nations of the earth. Faithlife Bible.

God’s coming reversal of human wisdom is desired by all who presently suffer the arrogance of people who prate their knowledge with no fear of the living God. NKJ Bible.

Job 12:13–25
13 “With Him are wisdom and strength,
He has counsel and understanding.
14 If He breaks a thing down, it cannot be rebuilt;
If He imprisons a man, there can be no release.
15 If He withholds the waters, they dry up;
If He sends them out, they overwhelm the earth.
16 With Him are strength and prudence.
The deceived and the deceiver are His.
17 He leads counselors away plundered,
And makes fools of the judges.
18 He loosens the bonds of kings,
And binds their waist with a belt.
19 He leads princes away plundered,
And overthrows the mighty.
20 He deprives the trusted ones of speech,
And takes away the discernment of the elders.
21 He pours contempt on princes,
And disarms the mighty.
22 He uncovers deep things out of darkness,
And brings the shadow of death to light.
23 He makes nations great, and destroys them;
He enlarges nations, and guides them.
24 He takes away the understanding of the chiefs of the people of the earth,
And makes them wander in a pathless wilderness.
25 They grope in the dark without light,
And He makes them stagger like a drunken man.

Genesis 7:11 | In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the fountains of the great deep were broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.

Genesis 7:12 | And the rain was on the earth forty days and forty nights.

Psalm 107:40 | He pours contempt on princes, And causes them to wander in the wilderness where there is no way;

Daniel 2:22 | He reveals deep and secret things; He knows what is in the darkness, And light dwells with Him.

1 Corinthians 4:5 | Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness and reveal the counsels of the hearts. Then each one’s praise will come from God.

The triumphal entry of Jesus in Jerusalem

Jesus fulfilled all Scripture concerning the Messiah. With His birth, death and resurrection we now enter into a new and everlasting covenant. We exchanged the earthly blessings of the Old Testament for the eternal spiritual blessings of the New.

The triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem.
The Mount of Olives was directly east of Jerusalem, across the deep ravine of the Kidron valley. Bethphage was on the eastern slope of the Mount of Olives. The emphasis in these prophecies and Jesus’ actions is on Jesus’ humility.  The scene was a royal procession. Prior to this time, the Lord Jesus had steadfastly avoided such a display. Now He was publicly presenting Himself to Israel as the nation’s Messiah and King. Christ’s deity is evident. This was the triumphal entry on Palm Sunday. The crowd recognized Jesus’ lordship by repeating a messianic psalm. Jesus retired to Bethany each night, perhaps staying in a friend’s home. Jesus was in control of the events of the last week of His life, even though those events led to His death. Here He prepared to enter the city riding a colt. The disciples recognized that Jesus was the promised King sent from God. He is the One who brings peace to the relationship between people and God. Such borrowing of an animal was not as strange as it may appear. There was an ancient custom by which a political or religious leader could commandeer property for short-term use. Jesus was entering Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread, festivals that commemorated the great act of God’s deliverance of the nation. Such feasts were often celebrated at this time with the hope that God’s decisive deliverance would come. Jesus knew that so many of the people of Israel had rejected Him that the nation would suffer judgment, in the form of the terrible destruction that came on Jerusalem in a.d. 70. This was the Sunday before Christ arose, today called Palm Sunday. Until this point, Jesus had discouraged expressions of support from the people. Here He allowed public enthusiasm. He entered Jerusalem on the back of a young donkey. This act fulfilled prophecy and as such was a symbolic proclamation that Jesus is the Messiah. After Christ’s death, resurrection, and ascension, the disciples finally understood that the OT prophecies concerning the Messiah had been fulfilled in Jesus. NKJ Bible.

Kings were known to enter cities in splendor, especially during coronation or after a victorious battle. They may have ridden a chariot pulled by four horses or even elephants and been accompanied by troops. While Jesus does enter as king, His approach is humble—He is not accompanied by soldiers and rides on a borrowed colt. This not only emphasizes Jesus’ humility as king, but also reflects the nature of the kingdom of God. Jesus enters Jerusalem as its king, and the people accept Him as such.

This crowd probably consists of peasants, most of whom seem to have accompanied Jesus from Galilee.  Unlike the city dwellers who later call for Jesus’ death, these peasants believe that He is the Messiah. The Pharisees recognize the symbolism of Jesus’ manner of arrival, as well as the messianic overtones in the cries of the crowd. Also, they might have feared that shouts of praise to the king would incite a violent response from the Romans, as it could have been viewed as anti-imperial. The people make a path for Jesus to enter the city as royalty. Faithlife Bible.

Matthew 211-9
21 Now when they drew near Jerusalem, and came to Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying to them, “Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Loose them and bring them to Me. 3 And if anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord has need of them,’ and immediately he will send them.”
4 All this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying:
5 “Tell the daughter of Zion,
‘Behold, your King is coming to you,
Lowly, and sitting on a donkey,
A colt, the foal of a donkey.’ ”
6 So the disciples went and did as Jesus commanded them. 7 They brought the donkey and the colt, laid their clothes on them, and set Him on them. 8 And a very great multitude spread their clothes on the road; others cut down branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 Then the multitudes who went before and those who followed cried out, saying:
“Hosanna to the Son of David!
‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’
Hosanna in the highest!”

Mark 11:1-11
11 Now when they drew near Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, He sent two of His disciples; 2 and He said to them, “Go into the village opposite you; and as soon as you have entered it you will find a colt tied, on which no one has sat. Loose it and bring it. 3 And if anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord has need of it,’ and immediately he will send it here.”
4 So they went their way, and found the colt tied by the door outside on the street, and they loosed it. 5 But some of those who stood there said to them, “What are you doing, loosing the colt?”
6 And they spoke to them just as Jesus had commanded. So they let them go. 7 Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their clothes on it, and He sat on it. 8 And many spread their clothes on the road, and others cut down leafy branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 Then those who went before and those who followed cried out, saying:
“Hosanna!
‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’
10 Blessed is the kingdom of our father David
That comes in the name of the Lord!
Hosanna in the highest!”
11 And Jesus went into Jerusalem and into the temple. So when He had looked around at all things, as the hour was already late, He went out to Bethany with the twelve.

Luke 19:28-38
28 When He had said this, He went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29 And it came to pass, when He drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mountain called Olivet, that He sent two of His disciples, 30 saying, “Go into the village opposite you, where as you enter you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat. Loose it and bring it here. 31 And if anyone asks you, ‘Why are you loosing it?’ thus you shall say to him, ‘Because the Lord has need of it.’ ”
32 So those who were sent went their way and found it just as He had said to them. 33 But as they were loosing the colt, the owners of it said to them, “Why are you loosing the colt?”
34 And they said, “The Lord has need of him.” 35 Then they brought him to Jesus. And they threw their own clothes on the colt, and they set Jesus on him. 36 And as He went, many spread their clothes on the road.
37 Then, as He was now drawing near the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works they had seen, 38 saying:
“ ‘Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord!’
    Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”

John 12:12-19
12 The next day a great multitude that had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, 13 took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him, and cried out:
“Hosanna!
‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’
The King of Israel!”
14 Then Jesus, when He had found a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written:
15 “Fear not, daughter of Zion;
Behold, your King is coming,
Sitting on a donkey’s colt.”
16 His disciples did not understand these things at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about Him and that they had done these things to Him.
17 Therefore the people, who were with Him when He called Lazarus out of his tomb and raised him from the dead, bore witness. 18 For this reason the people also met Him, because they heard that He had done this sign. 19 The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, “You see that you are accomplishing nothing. Look, the world has gone after Him!”

Psalm 118:25 | Save now, I pray, O LORD;O LORD, I pray, send now prosperity.

Psalm 118:26 | Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD!We have blessed you from the house of the LORD.

John 3:10-17

As Believers we will never fully comprehend what God has prepared for us who love Him and are called by Him for His glory. God loves His creation. He will go to great lengths to save us from ourselves. Look closely into the face of your Creator and live!

No one will ever love you like He does…no one!

With this title—the Greek equivalent of “rabbi”—Jesus places Nicodemus among the educated elite of Judaism. Jesus can attest to both worldly and heavenly truths, but Nicodemus needs to be willing to accept His witness. Jesus is alluding to His heavenly origin. Since He comes from heaven, He is qualified to speak authoritatively about heavenly things. The Son of man be lifted up alludes to both the crucifixion and the exaltation of Jesus in His death and resurrection. The verses present a concise summary of the gospel message, tying the events of Jesus’ death to God’s love for the world He created. The statement is remarkable in its depiction of divine care for the entire world—not just His chosen people, Israel. As one sent by God, Jesus fully represented Him on earth. Faithlife Bible.

Jesus answered Nicodemus’s question, but first He rebuked Nicodemus for being a teacher of the Hebrew Scriptures and not knowing about spiritual birth. Jesus had others in mind beyond Nicodemus. Jesus rebuked not only Nicodemus, but the other Pharisees as well.  Nicodemus may have believed in Jesus’ miracles the majority of the Jewish council did not. Nicodemus, referring to the new birth, asks, “How can these things be?” Jesus answers the question. New birth is by the Son, by the Cross, and by faith.  When Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, those who looked at it lived. So it is with the Son of Man. When a person trusts Christ, he or she is born again and receives eternal and spiritual life, God’s kind of life. God’s love is not restricted to any one nation or to any spiritual elite. World here may also include all of creation. At His first coming, Jesus came so that the world through Him might be saved. When Jesus comes again, He will come in judgment upon those who refused His offer of salvation. NKJ Bible.

John 3:10-17
10 Jesus answered and said to him, “Are you the teacher of Israel, and do not know these things? 11 Most assuredly, I say to you, We speak what We know and testify what We have seen, and you do not receive Our witness. 12 If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13 No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man who is in heaven. 14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

Numbers 21:9 | So Moses made a bronze serpent, and put it on a pole; and so it was, if a serpent had bitten anyone, when he looked at the bronze serpent, he lived.

Proverbs 30:4 | Who has ascended into heaven, or descended? Who has gathered the wind in His fists? Who has bound the waters in a garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is His name, and what is His Son’s name,If you know?

Isaiah 9:6 | For unto us a Child is born,Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Matthew 11:27 | All things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father. Nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.

Hosea 4:1-4

God is a righteous judge. He has the final say in all matters. If we reject Him as an individual or as a nation He will leave us to fend for ourselves. Choose wisely who you serve.

The prudent remain silent in times like these.

Knowledge of God produces behavior emulating God. The offenses listed here are violations of the Ten Commandments. The curses of the covenant affected the entire land, and by extension, all life dependent on that land. Faithlife Bible.

This is a formal complaint charging Israel with breaking the covenant. Mercy means “loyalty” or “devotion.” Knowledge does not refer to intellectual awareness, but to recognition of God’s authority as Israel’s covenant Lord. NKJ Bible.

Hosea 4:1-4
4 Hear the word of the Lord,
You children of Israel,
For the Lord brings a charge against the inhabitants of the land:
“There is no truth or mercy
Or knowledge of God in the land.
2 By swearing and lying,
Killing and stealing and committing adultery,
They break all restraint,
With bloodshed upon bloodshed.
3 Therefore the land will mourn;
And everyone who dwells there will waste away
With the beasts of the field
And the birds of the air;
Even the fish of the sea will be taken away.
4 “Now let no man contend, or rebuke another;
For your people are like those who contend with the priest.

Jeremiah 4:22 | “For My people are foolish,They have not known Me.They are silly children,And they have no understanding.They are wise to do evil,But to do good they have no knowledge.”

John 8:34-36

The things of this world so easily entrap us!

Be wise, not living in a rose colored world, BUT be as gentle and kind to others as God is to us. The Holy Spirit is always with us to guide and teach us. He will not leave you as He found you. You will be changed, precept by precept, into the image of His Son.

Whom Jesus makes free is free indeed.

Be fair
Forgive easily
Always be humble

Membership by birth was superior to membership by obligation. Faithlife Bible.

Jesus was speaking of spiritual slavery. Such a slave cannot break away from his bondage. He must have someone else set him free. A slave was not a permanent resident of a house. A son remained a family member with family privileges forever. The application proves that the “Son” here is Jesus Christ. As a family member, the Son can bestow family privileges on others. NKJ Bible.

John 8:34-36
34 Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. 35 And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. 36 Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.

Proverbs 5:22 | His own iniquities entrap the wicked man, And he is caught in the cords of his sin.

Romans 6:16 | Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?

Galatians 5:1 | Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.

Proverbs 9:7-12

The wicked man punishes those who correct them. The wise man listens to the wisdom of God. Pray for the wicked that God will take care of the matter. He alone sees the whole of a situation. We only see in part.

The wisdom of God in the Holy Spirit teaches us the truth and gives us the ability to continue in it…help me to seek You daily!

In Proverbs, scoffers refuse correction. Their arrogance prevents them from obtaining wisdom. In contrast to the scoffer, the wise person accepts rebuke. Throughout Proverbs, the wise person exhibits wisdom by humbly looking to increase in wisdom. In Proverbs, one reward for wisdom is long life. The verse essentially warns that rejecting reproof occurs at one’s own peril. Faithlife Bible.

A scoffer or mocker is thoroughly set against wisdom and scoffs at the things of God. How should a person respond to a mocker? It is best not to respond at all. By contrast, a wise man accepts correction and responds with gratitude to the one who points out his error. A wise person always welcomes constructive criticism; by implication, he or she is also humble. The only appropriate way to approach the holy God is with fear, that is, reverence. You will feel the effects of your wisdom or foolishness directly; you cannot escape them. NKJ Bible.

Proverbs 9:7-12
7 “He who corrects a scoffer gets shame for himself,
And he who rebukes a wicked man only harms himself.
8 Do not correct a scoffer, lest he hate you;
Rebuke a wise man, and he will love you.
9 Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser;
Teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.
10 “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
11 For by me your days will be multiplied,
And years of life will be added to you.
12 If you are wise, you are wise for yourself,
And if you scoff, you will bear it alone.”

Job 28:28 | And to man He said,‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, And to depart from evil is understanding.’ ”

Job 35:6 | If you sin, what do you accomplish against Him? Or, if your transgressions are multiplied, what do you do to Him?

Job 35:7 | If you are righteous, what do you give Him? Or what does He receive from your hand?

Psalm 111:10 | The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; A good understanding have all those who do His commandments. His praise endures forever.

Psalm 141:5 | Let the righteous strike me; It shall be a kindness. And let him rebuke me; It shall be as excellent oil; Let my head not refuse it. For still my prayer is against the deeds of the wicked.

Mark 3:22-25

Our strength lies in Christ alone any other is just sinking sand. Be strong in Christ.
Seek the Kingdom of God first and the rest is HIStory.

Satan seeks to kill, steal and destroy our lives.
He wants us to forget that God is our strength and in our weakness He is made strong.

Jesus confronts the religious leaders with the possibility that, by opposing Him, they might be aligning themselves with evil powers. The defining mark of a disciple of God’s kingdom is allegiance to Jesus and His teaching. Faithlife Bible.

The scribes, or teachers of the Jewish law, were more harsh and direct in their assessment of Jesus. They accused Him of being possessed by Beelzebub another name for Satan. This false charge demonstrates a hardness of heart and is akin to blaspheming against the Holy Spirit. Jesus’ reply in parables was actually a threefold message that contrasted unity and disunity. Nothing—including Satan’s kingdom—can stand if it is divided. NKJ Bible.

Mark 3:22-25
23 So He called them to Himself and said to them in parables: “How can Satan cast out Satan? 24 If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25 And if a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand. 26 And if Satan has risen up against himself, and is divided, he cannot stand, but has an end. 27 No one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man. And then he will plunder his house.

Matthew 12:25 | But Jesus knew their thoughts, and said to them: “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand.

Micah 2:1-5

Dear Lord, please give America a renewing of her mind and a heart that seeks You. Have we become like Babylon where money and power have become our gods?

Let us know that You alone provide. You alone protect. You alone know the path of the righteousness of Christ in us. His light is for our good and the salvation of the world You created.

May we always remember that there is no one righteous but our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

These wicked individuals lay on their beds at night thinking of evil plots. They cannot sleep because they are consumed with wickedness. These evildoers were powerful, wealthy people with the ability to carry out their schemes and profit by them. The mistreatment of others has given these evildoers the impression that they are better than those upon whom they prey. The land of Israel will be given to a foreign nation that does not worship Yahweh. Faithlife Bible.

The ethical teaching of the prophets regularly included oracles of judgment against greed, theft, and oppression, actions of the powerful in attacking the weak. To covet is not just to have a passing thought; it is a determination to seize what is not one’s own. God would take the property rights from those who had seized them illegally and give them to people who were even more reprobate than they were

These words may have been a strong warning to Micah not to be like the lying prophets who counseled that all was well in the land. NKJ Bible.

Micah 2:1-5
2 Woe to those who devise iniquity,
And work out evil on their beds!
At morning light they practice it,
Because it is in the power of their hand.
2 They covet fields and take them by violence,
Also houses, and seize them.
So they oppress a man and his house,
A man and his inheritance.
3 Therefore thus says the Lord:
“Behold, against this family I am devising disaster,
From which you cannot remove your necks;
Nor shall you walk haughtily,
For this is an evil time.
4 In that day one shall take up a proverb against you,
And lament with a bitter lamentation, saying:
‘We are utterly destroyed!
He has changed the heritage of my people;
How He has removed it from me!
To a turncoat He has divided our fields.”

Exodus 20:5 | you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me,

Isaiah 14:4 | that you will take up this proverb against the king of Babylon, and say:“How the oppressor has ceased,The golden city ceased!

Amos 5:13 | Therefore the prudent keep silent at that time, For it is an evil time.

Jesus offered Himself, a living sacrifice, so that all of mankind could know the truth and be saved. God does not want anyone to perish but all to come to the eternal salvation that He provided so that no one could boast in their own goodness.

Open the eyes of our hearts Lord! We want to see You.

Paul records what Jesus said to him on the road to Damascus, elaborating both on the earlier account in Acts and what he has previously articulated during his former trials. Like a stubborn animal attempting to fight the sticks used as prods, Paul cannot succeed in fighting against God. Faithlife Bible.

Before his encounter with Jesus on the Damascus road, Paul was resisting God. Paul speaks of the “renewing of your mind.” We do what we think is best, what makes sense to us. Paul was killing Christians because he thought it was the correct course of action. Christ’s revelation changed his thoughts, but his preaching of the Good News was visible proof that he had repented of his former ways. Genuine repentance is evidenced by changed behavior. NKJ Bible.

Acts 26:12-18
12 “While thus occupied, as I journeyed to Damascus with authority and commission from the chief priests, 13 at midday, O king, along the road I saw a light from heaven, brighter than the sun, shining around me and those who journeyed with me. 14 And when we all had fallen to the ground, I heard a voice speaking to me and saying in the Hebrew language, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me? It is hard for you to kick against the goads.’ 15 So I said, ‘Who are You, Lord?’ And He said, ‘I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. 16 But rise and stand on your feet; for I have appeared to you for this purpose, to make you a minister and a witness both of the things which you have seen and of the things which I will yet reveal to you. 17 I will deliver you from the Jewish people, as well as from the Gentiles, to whom I now send you, 18 to open their eyes, in order to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in Me.’

Isaiah 42:16 | I will bring the blind by a way they did not know; I will lead them in paths they have not known. I will make darkness light before them, and crooked places straight.These things I will do for them, And not forsake them.

Luke 1:77 | To give knowledge of salvation to His people by the remission of their sins,

Luke 1:79 | To give light to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, To guide our feet into the way of peace.”

John 14:1-4

Just believe.

Believe in the power of the Holy Spirit to raise you from the dead in Christ Jesus!

Jesus reiterates to His disciples that faith in Him alone will bring salvation. He uses another metaphorical “I am” statement—this time that He is the way, the truth, and the life. Faithllife Bible.

Everybody has a longing for a permanent, secure place. Such places have already been set aside for all of God’s children. Peter may have failed Jesus, but Christ will not fail to return for Peter and for everyone else who has believed in Him. Through His death and resurrection, Jesus is the way to the Father. He is also the truth and the life. As truth, He is the revelation of God. As life, He is the communication of God to us. NKJ Bible.

John 14:1-4
14 “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. 2 In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. 4 And where I go you know, and the way you know.”

John 14:27 | Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

John 16:22 | Therefore you now have sorrow; but I will see you again and your heart will rejoice, and your joy no one will take from you.

John 16:24 | Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.

Jeremiah 51:49-53

The cultural idols of the Babylonians…power, control and greed will be wiped away by the reign of Jesus, King of kings and Lord of lords. In His Kingdom the lion will lay down with the lamb and war and violence will cease to exist.

What a glorious day that will be!

The judgment oracle against Babylon continues, focusing on Babylon’s ultimate destruction.

The lengthy oracle condemning Babylon concludes with a final symbolic action that Jeremiah performs vicariously through the royal official Seraiah, brother of Baruch. Seraiah is part of the delegation accompanying King Zedekiah to Babylon in 593 bc. The delegation might have been in response to the rebellion in Syria-Palestine being promoted by Edom, Moab, Tyre, and Sidon. Perhaps Zedekiah was bringing tribute to Nebuchadnezzar to emphasize his submission and avoid reprisals. Jeremiah gives Seraiah a scroll listing the disasters that will befall Babylon. He commands Seraiah to read the scroll aloud in Babylon, then tie it to a rock and throw it into the Euphrates River. The action symbolizes that the list will come true; the same thing that happened to the scroll will happen to Babylon. Faithlife Bible.

Babylon would be destroyed for killing so many in Israel. The remnant of Israel would be called upon to remember their God and how He delivered them from afar. Zedekiah reigned as king of Judah from 598 to 586 b.c., until God finally cast him out of Jerusalem for doing evil in the sight of the Lord.

Jeremiah 51:49-53
As Babylon has caused the slain of Israel to fall,
So at Babylon the slain of all the earth shall fall.
50 You who have escaped the sword,
Get away! Do not stand still!
Remember the Lord afar off,
And let Jerusalem come to your mind.
51 We are ashamed because we have heard reproach.
Shame has covered our faces,
For strangers have come into the sanctuaries of the Lord’s house.
52 “Therefore behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord,
“That I will bring judgment on her carved images,
And throughout all her land the wounded shall groan.
53 Though Babylon were to mount up to heaven,
And though she were to fortify the height of her strength,
Yet from Me plunderers would come to her,” says the Lord.

Genesis 11:4 | And they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens; let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.”
