Matthew 26:31–35

The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak!

In ourselves we can do nothing. We will fail every time. When Holy Spirit came on Pentecost He endued them with the power to carry out God’s will in their lives.

Jesus overcame the world! In Him nothing is impossible.

Job 28:28 28 And to man He said, ‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, And to depart from evil is understanding.’ ”

Matthew 26:31–35

31 Then Jesus said to them, “All of you will be made to stumble because of Me this night, for it is written: ‘I will strike the Shepherd, And the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ 32 But after I have been raised, I will go before you to Galilee.” 33 Peter answered and said to Him, “Even if all are made to stumble because of You, I will never be made to stumble.” 34 Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you that this night, before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” 35 Peter said to Him, “Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You!” And so said all the disciples. The New King James Version

Jesus predicts that His disciples will abandon Him that very night. Jesus quotes Zechariah 13:7. Faithlife Study Bible

All the disciples, not just Peter, would fall away. I will strike the Shepherd … the flock will be scattered: This Old Testament prophecy is found in Zechariah 13:7.

Several reasons may be offered as to why Christ went to Galilee to meet His disciples: (1) They were all from Galilee; (2) He wanted to be away from Jerusalem, the center of opposition; (3) He wanted to take up the work of shepherding His flock where He had ministered to them before; or (4) the most effective setting for the Great Commission.

The rooster crow is usually thought to refer to the third Roman watch, from midnight to 3 a.m. The NKJV Study Bible

Improper self-confidence, like that of Peter, is the first step to a fall. There is a proneness in all of us to be over-confident. But those fall soonest and foulest, who are the most confident in themselves.

Those are least safe, who think themselves most secure. Satan is active to lead such astray; they are most off their guard: God leaves them to themselves, to humble them.  Matthew Henry’s Concise Commentary

Zechariah 13:7

“Awake, O sword, against My Shepherd,

Against the Man who is My Companion,”

Says the LORD of hosts.

“Strike the Shepherd,

And the sheep will be scattered;

Then I will turn My hand against the little ones.

Matthew 26:75 And Peter remembered the word of Jesus who had said to him, “Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” So he went out and wept bitterly.

Matthew 28:7 And go quickly and tell His disciples that He is risen from the dead, and indeed He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him. Behold, I have told you.”

Matthew 28:16 Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had appointed for them.

John 13:38 | Jesus answered him, “Will you lay down your life for My sake? Most assuredly, I say to you, the rooster shall not crow till you have denied Me three times.
