Jonah 1:1.2.3.

You can run but you cannot hide!

It’s as easy as 1.2.3…let the will of God reign in your life. His will will be done. It will happen the easy way or the hard way but if you claim Jesus as your Savior…it will happen.

Jonah 1:1-3

1 Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, 2 “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it; for their wickedness has come up before Me.” 3 But Jonah arose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord.

The name Jonah means “dove.” Jonah was from Gath Hepher (meaning “winepress of the pit”), a town in lower Galilee near Nazareth. The town has been identified with the modern village of el-Meshhed, where the tomb of Jonah is still shown. Gath Hepher was within the tribal territory given to Zebulun, so it is likely Jonah belonged to that tribe. Jonah ministered during the reign of Jeroboam II of Israel (793–753 bc). Nineveh was a major metropolis, one of four great cities of Assyria. There is a general reference to the city’s violence, immorality, and idolatry. Assyria was a militaristic society with a reputation for violence and cruelty in warfare. Their religion was polytheistic. Ashur, Adad, Sin, Shamash, and Ishtar were the chief deities of the Assyrian pantheon, Ashur being regarded as the most powerful. The Assyrian gods were patron gods, worshiped for their blessing and protection of specific cities. The patron deity of Nineveh was Ishtar, goddess of love and war. Tartessus was a Phoenician colony. At this time, Phoenicia was a close ally of Israel, an alliance solidified with the marriage between King Ahab of Israel and Jezebel, a Phoenician princess. Faithlife Bible

Throughout the Book of Jonah, the Lord shows Himself sovereign over every aspect of creation. In this case, the storm at sea was so ferocious that even the experienced mariners were afraid. The Phoenicians were the primary mariners of the ancient Middle East, so this was probably a Phoenician ship. Jonah was so sure he had averted God’s will that he was fast asleep in the ship’s hold. 2 Kings 14:25  He restored the territory of Israel from the entrance of Hamath to the Sea of the Arabah, according to the word of the LORD God of Israel, which He had spoken through His servant Jonah the son of Amittai, the prophet who was from Gath Hepher.
