2 Samuel 1:25-27

In our lifetime there will be those we love that will not love us. The ultimate sign of our death to the old man and the birth of our new man in Christ is when we, in the depths of our heart, want nothing but good for those who wish us evil.

It is easy to love those that love us but it is only in God’s love that we can love all men.

Saul the father of Jonathan grew to despise David and wanted him dead but even in the midst of this David refused to retaliate against God’s anointed.

David compared Jonathan’s love with that of women in its depth and loyalty. David was not afraid to speak of his deep and genuine love for his friend.

2 Samuel 1:25-27

25    “How the mighty have fallen in the midst of the battle!
Jonathan was slain in your high places.
26 I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan;
You have been very pleasant to me;
Your love to me was wonderful,
Surpassing the love of women.
27 “How the mighty have fallen,
And the weapons of war perished!”

So Jonathan told David, saying, “My father Saul seeks to kill you. Therefore please be on your guard until morning, and stay in a secret place and hide.
1 Samuel 19:2

17 Now Jonathan again caused David to vow, because he loved him; for he loved him as he loved his own soul.

1 Samuel 20:17
