Matthew 5:12-18

Just as Jesus was crucified by the religious elite at His first coming there is a real probability that He will be rejected at His return by the religious elite. They are in bondage to the letter of the law, which brings death, instead of the liberty which God sent to the earth in Christ Jesus. There are works for us to do on earth but they are done out of the love that we were given in the salvation of the cross. The love that our works show to others will draw all people to Christ.

The sick man was healed without exercising any faith. He did not know who Jesus was when he was healed. However, Jesus caught up with the man later. This is the first recorded declaration of open hostility toward Jesus in the Gospel of John. Since God continually does good works without allowing Himself to stop on the Sabbath, the Son does likewise, since He is equal with God. Certainly the Jewish leaders understood the implications of Jesus’ claims

12 Then they asked him, “Who is the Man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?” 13 But the one who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, a multitude being in that place. 14 Afterward Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, “See, you have been made well. Sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon you.”

15 The man departed and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.

16 For this reason the Jews persecuted Jesus, and sought to kill Him, because He had done these things on the Sabbath.

17 But Jesus answered them, “My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.”

18 Therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill Him, because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also said that God was His Father, making Himself equal with God.

Matthew 25:14-29

We cannot let fear of failure stop us from perfecting the talents God has given us. He expects us to make the most of the abilities that He gives us both spiritually and physically and then to apply them for our good and the good of His kingdom. The Father wants a return in the investment that He makes in mankind. We are created to give Him glory, honor and praise.

His kingdom did not involve a political restoration of the nation of Israel as many Jews had hoped. Instead He brought a heavenly kingdom with a spiritual domain, the hearts of His people. Such a kingdom demanded internal repentance, not just external submission. It provided deliverance from sin rather than political deliverance.

The parable of the talents illustrates the faithfulness required of God’s servants. The fact that the master traveled to a far country indicates that there would be ample time to test the faithfulness of the servants. It was believed that money hidden in the ground was as secure as it could be. The first two servants received the same reward, even though they had received different amounts of money. The reward was based on faithfulness, not on the size of their responsibilities. The smallest task in God’s work may receive a great reward if we are faithful in performing it. This proverb illustrates that a person must use what God has given or else lose it. This includes abilities and spiritual gifts, as well as material possessions.

25:14 “For the kingdom of heaven is like a man traveling to a far country, who called his own servants and delivered his goods to them. 15 And to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, to each according to his own ability; and immediately he went on a journey. 16 Then he who had received the five talents went and traded with them, and made another five talents. 17 And likewise he who had received two gained two more also. 18 But he who had received one went and dug in the ground, and hid his lord’s money. 19 After a long time the lord of those servants came and settled accounts with them.

20 “So he who had received five talents came and brought five other talents, saying, ‘Lord, you delivered to me five talents; look, I have gained five more talents besides them.’ 21 His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’ 22 He also who had received two talents came and said, ‘Lord, you delivered to me two talents; look, I have gained two more talents besides them.’ 23 His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’

24 “Then he who had received the one talent came and said, ‘Lord, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you have not sown, and gathering where you have not scattered seed. 25 And I was afraid, and went and hid your talent in the ground. Look, there you have what is yours.’

26 “But his lord answered and said to him, ‘You wicked and lazy servant, you knew that I reap where I have not sown, and gather where I have not scattered seed. 27 So you ought to have deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming I would have received back my own with interest. 28 So take the talent from him, and give it to him who has ten talents.

29 ‘For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away.

Luke 10:38-42

We all have different personalities, gifts from God, and we must learn to respect all people for the person that they are and will become in Christ. We are changed precept upon precept and we are all a work in progress. God loves us in each stage of our sanctification.

Martha was distracted by the amount of serving she had to do. Her complaint to Jesus indicates that she was irritated that her sister was not helping her. Jesus’ tender reply is evident in the double address of Martha, Martha. He notes that Martha was anxiety-ridden over ordinary matters. Mary was a silent example. She said nothing, but did what was right by devoting herself to Jesus’ teaching.

38 Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word. 40 But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.”

41 And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. 42 But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.”

Matthew 20:1-16

God in His mercy and grace offers the gift of salvation to all people. For God so loved all of us that He offered up Himself in the Body of Jesus Christ to save any of us who would accept His righteous life in exchange for our own.

The first workers complained that their wages were the same as those who had been hired late in the day. However, the owner had not cheated them; everyone received the agreed-upon sum for his work. The early workers grumbled because they were evil in their outlook; their master, however, was sovereignly generous.

In the context of Matthew, the workers with the contract represent Israel; they had the promises and the covenants. Those without an agreement represent the Gentiles, who would be made equal with the Jewish people when salvation became available to all through faith in Jesus Christ.

20:1 “For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. 2 Now when he had agreed with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard. 3 And he went out about the third hour and saw others standing idle in the marketplace, 4 and said to them, ‘You also go into the vineyard, and whatever is right I will give you.’ So they went. 5 Again he went out about the sixth and the ninth hour, and did likewise. 6 And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing idle, and said to them, ‘Why have you been standing here idle all day?’ 7 They said to him, ‘Because no one hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You also go into the vineyard, 2and whatever is right you will receive.’

8 “So when evening had come, the owner of the vineyard said to his steward, ‘Call the laborers and give them their wages, beginning with the last to the first.’ 9 And when those came who were hired about the eleventh hour, they each received a denarius. 10 But when the first came, they supposed that they would receive more; and they likewise received each a denarius. 11 And when they had received it, they 3complained against the landowner, 12 saying, ‘These last men have worked only one hour, and you made them equal to us who have borne the burden and the heat of the day.’ 13 But he answered one of them and said, ‘Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Did you not agree with me for a denarius? 14 Take what is yours and go your way. I wish to give to this last man the same as to you. 15 Is it not lawful for me to do what I wish with my own things? Or is your eye evil because I am good?’ 16 So the last will be first, and the first last. For many are called, but few chosen.”

Ecclesiastes 5:19-20

How time flies when we are making the most of our talents content with the gifts that the Father gives to us, praising God for His mercy and grace. Life is blessed in Him and joy in the Lord is our strength!

God keeps a person occupied and delighted primarily with Himself and then with the gifts He gives.

19 As for every man to whom God has given riches and wealth, and given him power to eat of it, to receive his heritage and rejoice in his labor—this is the gift of God. 20 For he will not dwell unduly on the days of his life, because God keeps him busy with the joy of his heart.

Ecclesiastes 2:24-25

Having dreams and aspirations and the talent to put them to use is the gift of a loving God who cares for us and wants us to be fulfilled and happy in this life and in the life to come.

The Preacher concludes that all good is located only in God. In the midst of a world of trouble, a believer is able to seize the moment in joy from God. Only God supplies the key to the meaning of life. Without Him, genuine meaning, satisfaction, and enjoyment in life are ultimately elusive.  God is the great Giver of all good gifts.

2:24 Nothing is better for a man than that he should eat and drink, and that his soul should enjoy good in his labor. This also, I saw, was from the hand of God. 25 For who can eat, or who can have enjoyment, more than I?

Proverbs 22:29

We can’t be just dreamers we must pursue our dreams and perfect them!

29 Do you see a man who excels in his work?

He will stand before kings;

He will not stand before unknown men.

Proverbs 18:9

If we don’t work at increasing and using the skills that God has given us we destroy our chance of success. We can be our own worst enemy and Satan roams about seeking those he can destroy.

18:9 He who is slothful in his work

Is a brother to him who is a great destroyer.

Proverbs 14:23

It is a good thing to fill our days working to perfect the gifts given to us by God. It keeps us out of trouble and supports us.

14:23 In all labor there is profit,

But idle chatter leads only to poverty.

Proverbs 12:14

If we work hard with the talents that God provides us and then thank Him for His goodness and His mercy we will be blessed and at peace. All things work for the good of those who love God.

This is another way of saying “whatever a man sows, that he will also reap”

14 A man will be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth,

And the recompense of a man’s hands will be rendered to him.

Proverbs 12:11

God’s plan for man was to provide each of us with special talents and then for us to use those talents to support ourselves. God never intended man to sit idle and do nothing. High unemployment, disabilities, age or sickness can stop a person from using those gifts; then it is our obligation to step in and help those who through no fault of their own cannot support themselves.

Many proverbs contrast hard work with laziness. Wise people work hard while fools waste time.

12:11 He who tills his land will be satisfied with bread,

But he who follows frivolity is devoid of understanding

Psalm 90:17

The talents that God has given us are for our well being and for His glory. When we use the talents He has provided it gives purpose and meaning to our lives here on earth and it pleases God.

Moses asks God to give him a sense of lasting meaning in life, something that will continue to the next generation.

90:17 And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us,

And establish the work of our hands for us;

Yes, establish the work of our hands.

Deuteronomy 24:17-19

God loves and cares for all His creation and we are allowed the privilege of being His hands of compassion to all people not just our brothers in Christ. If we want the blessings of God on ourselves, our families and our nation we need to share our material goods and monies with those who are in need from the provisions that He gives to us. If we are going to say we are a Christian nation we have the responsibility of caring for all people…..there is no other way. If the agape love of God is held up, all people will be drawn to His love that is shown in Christ Jesus.

Just as God showed compassion on them when they were oppressed, they were to show compassion on those who were now disadvantaged. Ultimately, it is in one's own best interest to have a concern for the interest of others.

24:17 "You shall not pervert justice due the stranger or the fatherless, nor take a widow's garment as a pledge. 18 But you shall remember that you were a slave in Egypt, and the Lord your God redeemed you from there; therefore I command you to do this thing.

19 "When you reap your harvest in your field, and forget a sheaf in the field, you shall not go back to get it; it shall be for the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hands

Psalm 8:3-8

God created man in His image. He is love, mercy and compassion made flesh in Jesus Christ and in Him all things reside. That God would allow man to tend His creation is more than I can grasp and a responsibility that I question if we have a firm understanding of. He owns the vineyard and we are just the caretakers we would do well to think carefully about the return we are giving to His investment in man.

David is in awe at the splendors of creation; the wonders of nature lead him to praise its Creator. Even the universe with its infinite distances was the work of the Lord's fingers. In view of the vastness of creation and the surpassing glory of God the Creator, who are we to presume upon Him? Man, as male and female, stands at the summit of God's creation. The Hebrew text is "You have made him to lack little of God." God made human beings in His image, just a little lower than angels. God created human beings as majestic creatures who were to rule over His creation. But in our fallen state, we are profoundly disfigured, a perversion of the majesty God has intended. However, Jesus restores those who put their trust in Him.

8:3 When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers,

The moon and the stars, which You have ordained,

4 What is man that You are mindful of him,

And the son of man that You visit him?

5 For You have made him a little lower than the angels,

And You have crowned him with glory and honor.

6 You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands;

You have put all things under his feet,

7 All sheep and oxen—

Even the beasts of the field,

8 The birds of the air,

And the fish of the sea

That pass through the paths of the seas.

Deuteronomy

If America is indeed a nation founded on Christian principles then it is our command from God to take care of the needs of the unbeliever, the fatherless, and the widow in our nation. Only when we take care of all those in need in our nation will we be blessed by God. Our nation's taxes put to God's work!

Every third year the tithe was given to the Levites and the poor. The people's attitude toward the poor should have been a reflection of their gratitude for God's gifts to them. The creditor might have been wary of lending anything to the poor because the seventh year was approaching, the year that all debts were erased. Even though the creditor would not benefit from the loan, he was encouraged to lend to those in need.

14: 28-29 "At the end of every third year you shall bring out the tithe of your produce of that year and store it up within your gates. 29 And the Levite, because he has no portion nor inheritance with you, and the stranger and the fatherless and the widow who are within your gates,
may come and eat and be satisfied, that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hand which you do.

15:7-11 "If there is among you a poor man of your brethren, within any of the gates in your land which the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart nor shut your hand from your poor brother, 8 but you shall open your hand wide to him and willingly lend him sufficient for his need, whatever he needs. 9 Beware lest there be a wicked thought in your heart, saying, 'The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand,' and your eye be evil against your poor brother and you give him nothing, and he cry out to the Lord against you, and it become sin among you. 10 You shall surely give to him, and your heart should not be grieved when you give to him, because for this thing the Lord your God will bless you in all your works and in all to which you put your hand. 11 For the poor will never cease from the land; therefore I command you, saying, 'You shall open your hand wide to your brother, to your poor and your needy, in your land.'

Deuteronomy 2:7

When we place our total trust in God and try to follow His guidance, He will bless our work. In His will for us we will always have what we need to live a good and prosperous life spiritually and physically. Everything works out for good to those who love God and are called according to His purpose. I can relate this to our car GPA a gift from our daughter, whom we refer to as Alice, even when we accidently make a wrong turn; she reworks our route and gets us to our destination safely!

7 "For the Lord your God has blessed you in all the work of your hand. He knows your trudging through this great wilderness. These forty years the Lord your God has been with you; you have lacked nothing."

Exodus 20:8-11

God the Father in His infinite concern for others set aside one day a week for us to rest ……should we not listen? Or was the Sabbath fulfilled in Jesus Christ, King of the Sabbath, and now every day we rest in Him not just one day a week?

Other peoples had their own various patterns of work and rest, but Israel was to set aside one day in seven for rest. The word Sabbath means "rest." The day was kept holy by ceasing all labor on that day. The Sabbath was specifically the seventh day, Saturday. It was patterned after the seventh day of rest for God following the six days of creation.

The first day of the week was Sunday. The people gathered to worship on this day for the same reason we do today, to celebrate the day of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Jewish believers continued to worship on the Sabbath, which is Saturday. The Book of Hebrews tells us that Christ and His finished work is our Sabbath, our rest.

Hebrews 4:8 For if Joshua had given them rest, then He would not afterward have spoken of another day. 9 There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. 10 For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His.

20:8 "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.

Genesis 2:15

God created man and an environment to sustain him. It is man's job to care for each other and the land that he was given from the Father. We cannot destroy each other and the earth and be in God's will.

The garden was perfectly prepared. It was man's home and he had to tend and keep it. Even the biblical paradise required work.

15 Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it.

Jude 1:20-21

The only way to thrive spiritually in this fallen world is to keep our eyes on Jesus. When we begin to look at our own failures we fall into a false humility that serves no one. When we take the focus off of ourselves and on His righteousness we can be used by God to help spread the truth of Jesus Christ. All things done out of our love for God will not fail…..for love is God! Each day that we are given is one more extension of His mercy and His grace for man. Alone we can do nothing, with Christ in us and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, nothing is impossible.

Jude tells us how to keep ourselves in the love of God. It is clear that Jude is encouraging us to cultivate our love for Christ, for we cannot be separated from His love for us.

1:20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.

1 John 5:20

To know Jesus Christ is to know life. He opens our eyes to the fullness of the Godhead, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The mind, the body and the heart of the tripartite God who created all revealed in Him.

The understanding that Christ gives enables us to know God in a personal, intimate sense. Jesus Christ is the true God; to know Him is to have eternal life.

5:20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding, that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.

1 John 5:14-15

We can know with confidence that it is His will that all men hear the Word of God and be saved…..we can go out to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ with full assurance. It is not always ours to know the will of God and sometimes it may seem that our prayers are unanswered but we can rest knowing that all things in earth or in heaven are under His control and work out for the good of those who put their trust in Him.

The key to knowing that God hears our prayers is to pray according to His will.

5:14 Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15 And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.
