Matthew 19:23-26

Only in the grace of God do we live and breathe.

Kintsugi is an ancient Japanese method of repairing broken porcelain, using gold to fill the cracks. (Also known as Kintsukuori, which translates “golden joinery.”) The Kintsugi artisan uses gold (or other precious metal) mixed with epoxy to repair the broken piece.Yes, the gold honors the beauty of imperfection, and that beauty spills. There is power in our redemptive story. Terry Hershey “Sabbath Moments”

God repeatedly pledges his presence to his people. To Abram, God said, “Do not be afraid…I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward” (Genesis 15:1). God told Joshua, “Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9). Max Lucado.

Matthew 19:23-26

23 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “Assuredly, I say to you that it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. 24 And again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”

25 When His disciples heard it, they were greatly astonished, saying, “Who then can be saved?”

26 But Jesus looked at them and said to them, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

Jesus employs this ridiculous impossibility to capture His hearers’ attention and emphasize the great sacrifice necessitated by the kingdom of heaven. Jesus frequently uses exaggeration (or hyperbole) to make a point. The impact of these statements often comes from the comical nature of the images. Here the effect comes from picturing someone trying to force a camel—a large animal—through the eye of a needle—a very small hole. A similar image—an elephant going through the eye of a needle—is used in rabbinic literature to denote something impossible (Babylonian Talmud Berakhot 55b). The popular explanation that the “Eye of the Needle” was the name of a small gate in Jerusalem that camels could pass through only with great difficulty was first suggested in the 11th century AD, and there is no evidence such a gate existed. Jesus’ regular use of hyperbole and the parallel sayings from rabbinic texts, however, indicate it was a proverbial image.

Jesus’ remarks reverse the conventional wisdom of His day. It was commonly believed that if someone was blessed with riches, they had God’s approval and were thereby assured of entrance into His kingdom of heaven. Faithlife Bible.

Jesus’ comment about a rich man’s salvation would have been difficult for some Jewish people in this period to accept because they held to a form of “prosperity theology.” If people prospered, it was evidence of God’s blessing on them. Whereas this says it is hard for a rich man to become saved, implying that it is as impossible as passing a camel through the eye of a needle. NKJ Bible.

Genesis 18:14 Is anything too hard for the LORD? At the appointed time I will return to you, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.”

Job 42:2I know that You can do everything, and that no purpose of Yours can be withheld from You.

Jeremiah 32:17 ‘Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. There is nothing too hard for You.

John 20:11–18

My Lord and my God. His sheep know His voice.

Jesus was close to the outcast and marginalized of His culture.

Just B.E.L.I.E.V.E.

John 20:11–18

11 But Mary stood outside by the tomb weeping, and as she wept she stooped down and looked into the tomb. 12 And she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. 13 Then they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?”

She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.”

14 Now when she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and did not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?”

She, supposing Him to be the gardener, said to Him, “Sir, if You have carried Him away, tell me where You have laid Him, and I will take Him away.”

16 Jesus said to her, “Mary!”

She turned and said to Him, “Rabboni!” (which is to say, Teacher).

17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.’ ”

18 Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that He had spoken these things to her.

Angels were messengers of God. Angels in Scripture typically wear white, which symbolizes holiness.

Mary might not have recognized Jesus because His resurrected form was somehow different from His previous physical form. It also might have been too dark to see clearly. She recognizes Jesus for who He is and acknowledges His role as the one who taught her. Faithlife Bible.

When Christ uttered her name, Mary recognized His voice. Mary addressed Christ as Rabboni, an Aramaic term which John translates for his Greek readers. NLK Bible.

Christ, in manifesting himself to those that seek him, often outdoes their expectations. See how Mary’s heart was in earnest to find Jesus. We, partaking of a Divine nature, Christ’s Father is our Father; and he, partaking of the human nature, our God is his God. Christ’s ascension into heaven, there to plead for us, is likewise an unspeakable comfort. Let them not think this earth is to be their home and rest; their eye and aim, and earnest desires, must be upon another world, and this ever upon their hearts, I ascend, therefore I must seek the things which are above. And let those who know the word of Christ, endeavour that others should get good from their knowledge. Matthew Henry Commentary.

Mark 16:10 She went and told those who had been with Him, as they mourned and wept.

Luke 24:51 Now it came to pass, while He blessed them, that He was parted from them and carried up into heaven.

Acts 1:9 Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight.

Daniel 11:22–28

God is never surprised by what is happening here on earth.

He is always in control!

From the beginning of time to the coming of the Kingdom of God His plan for mankind will prevail!

Daniel 11:22–28

22 With the force of a flood they shall be swept away from before him and be broken, and also the prince of the covenant. 23 And after the league is made with him he shall act deceitfully, for he shall come up and become strong with a small number of people. 24 He shall enter peaceably, even into the richest places of the province; and he shall do what his fathers have not done, nor his forefathers: he shall disperse among them the plunder, spoil, and riches; and he shall devise his plans against the strongholds, but only for a time.

25 “He shall stir up his power and his courage against the king of the South with a great army. And the king of the South shall be stirred up to battle with a very great and mighty army; but he shall not stand, for they shall devise plans against him. 26 Yes, those who eat of the portion of his delicacies shall destroy him; his army shall be swept away, and many shall fall down slain. 27 Both these kings’ hearts shall be bent on evil, and they shall speak lies at the same table; but it shall not prosper, for the end will still be at the appointed time. 28 While returning to his land with great riches, his heart shall be moved against the holy covenant; so he shall do damage and return to his own land.

The high priest Onias III, was murdered in the time of Antiochus IV. An alliance is probably a reference to Greek sympathizers among the Jews. Those who desired to remain faithful to their Jewish roots far outweighed those who desired to embrace Greek culture.

Antiochus’ standard operating procedure was, after infiltrating the wealthiest ranks of society and garnering their support, to be generous to them—almost to a fault.

Antiochus attacked Egypt in 170 bc.. Ptolemy VI, who was a boy when Antiochus attacked, was poorly influenced by his two advisors, Eulaeus and Lenaeus. Ptolemy VI’s mother was Cleopatra Syra, Antiochus’ sister. Ptolemy agreed to meet with his uncle in Memphis. Antiochus IV feigned friendship and allegedly took control of his nephew’s kingdom.

As is typical in apocalyptic literature, events have a predetermined course that cannot be altered. On his way back from Egypt, Antiochus was short on funds and plundered the gold of the Jerusalem temple. Antiochus influenced his nephew, Ptolemy VI, to control Egypt. Faithlife Bible.

They shall be swept away is probably a reference to the Egyptians. The prince of the covenant refers to Onias III, the high priest in Jerusalem who bore that title.

The king of the South at this time was Ptolemy Philometor (181–145 b.c.) of Egypt. The trusted counselors of Ptolemy Philometor who ate at his table betrayed him. Both Antiochus and Ptolemy resorted to deceit and betrayal. On his way back to Syria, Antiochus looted the temple in Jerusalem and killed many people. NKJ Bible.

These verses relate to Antiochus Epiphanes, who was a cruel and violent persecutor of the Jews. See what decaying, perishing things worldly pomp and possessions are, and the power by which they are gotten. God, in his providence, sets up one, and pulls down another, as he pleases. This world is full of wars and fightings, which come from men’s lusts. All changes and revolutions of states and kingdoms, and every event, are plainly and perfectly foreseen by God. No word of God shall fall to the ground; but what he has designed, what he has declared, shall infallibly come to pass. While the potsherds of the earth strive with each other, they prevail and are prevailed against, deceive and are deceived; but those who know God will trust in him, and he will enable them to stand their ground, bear their cross, and maintain their conflict. Matthew Henry Commentary.

Psalm 12:2 They speak idly everyone with his neighbor; with flattering lips and a double heart they speak.

Daniel 8:19 And he said, “Look, I am making known to you what shall happen in the latter time of the indignation; for at the appointed time the end shall be.

Habakkuk 2:3 For the vision is yet for an appointed time; but at the end it will speak, and it will not lie.Though it tarries, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.

2 Timothy 3:10-15

Believers need to be as wise as the serpent, aware of the evil times we live in, but as gentle as the Lamb of God in our actions in grace and love.

Knowledge of salvation in Jesus is the truth.

Faith in Him is the way.

2 Timothy 3:10-15

10 But you have carefully followed my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, love, perseverance, 11 persecutions, afflictions, which happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra—what persecutions I endured. And out of them all the Lord delivered me. 12 Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.

13 But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14 But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, 15 and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

Paul draws a sharp contrast between a Christian testimony and the way of the false teachers. He notes ten different qualities of his own teaching and life that Timothy had had opportunity to observe. Those who want to live godly lives must be prepared for persecution, literally “to be hunted.” God does not promise us deliverance from persecution but deliverance through it. Persecution is one of the means God uses to develop our capacity to reign with Him in His kingdom.

The Greek word translated impostors can also mean sorcerers or swindlers. False teachers deceive themselves as well as others.

Paul emphasizes Timothy’s godly heritage. His mother Eunice and his grandmother Lois had faithfully taught him the Holy Scriptures. The truths of God’s Word directed Timothy to Christ.

God’s Word and the Spirit of God are both essential for our salvation. The Word of God without the Spirit of God is lifeless; it has no power to act. But the Word of God empowered by the Spirit of God becomes a living force in our lives. NKJ Bible.

Paul connects his instruction and his lifestyle, listing the virtues that define true godliness, not just a form of it. In doing so, he contrasts himself with the false teachers. Paul’s entire ministry he considers worthy of imitation.

Paul visited these cities during his first missionary journey. In Pisidian Antioch,  opponents drove Paul out of the city. In Iconium,  they tried to stone him, in Lystra,  they finally succeeded.

Those who are godly should expect persecution. In Jewish tradition, boys received instruction in Torah beginning at age five.  In this context, salvation is the subject of instruction. Scripture makes a person wise, but the instruction of false teachers leads to folly. Throughout the Pastoral Letters, Paul relates knowledge of the truth with salvation. In this verse, Paul returns to “faith in Christ Jesus” as the means of salvation.

Paul uses the Greek term theopneustos here (meaning “God-breathed”) to assure Timothy that Scripture is, in fact, from God. Although God used people to produce the Scriptures, their ultimate origin is God. By contrast, the false teaching that Timothy opposed comes from evil forces who spread their doctrine through errant teachers. Scripture is valuable because it corrects false teaching while building up believers to live godly lives. Faithlife Bible.

As good men, by the grace of God, grow better, so bad men, through the craft of Satan, and the power of their own corruptions, grow worse. The way of sin is down-hill; such go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. Those who deceive others, deceive themselves, as they will find at last, to their cost. Matthew Henry Commentary.

Psalm 34:19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the LORD delivers him out of them all.

Psalm 119:99 I have more understanding than all my teachers, for Your testimonies are my meditation.

John 5:39 You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me.

Daniel 12:4–13

And the end shall come. An end to violence and the evil of this world that will usher in a time of  permanent peace. Not the peace of this world which is temporary, but everlasting peace with our God through Jesus. Gods’ ways are sometimes hidden in Him.

There is a rest now for Gods’ people. This peaceful rest is found in Christ.

Daniel 12:4–13

4 “But you, Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book until the time of the end; many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase.”

5 Then I, Daniel, looked; and there stood two others, one on this riverbank and the other on that riverbank. 6 And one said to the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, “How long shall the fulfillment of these wonders be?”

7 Then I heard the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand to heaven, and swore by Him who lives forever, that it shall be for a time, times, and half a time; and when the power of the holy people has been completely shattered, all these things shall be finished.

8 Although I heard, I did not understand. Then I said, “My lord, what shall be the end of these things?”

9 And he said, “Go your way, Daniel, for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end. 10 Many shall be purified, made white, and refined, but the wicked shall do wickedly; and none of the wicked shall understand, but the wise shall understand. 11 “And from the time that the daily sacrifice is taken away, and the abomination of desolation is set up, there shall be one thousand two hundred and ninety days. 12 Blessed is he who waits, and comes to the one thousand three hundred and thirty-five days.

13 “But you, go your way till the end; for you shall rest, and will arise to your inheritance at the end of the days.

Expansion of Palestine under the Maccabees (166 b.c.)

Israel was plunged into a grueling period of religious persecution with the accession of Antiochus IV to the throne of the Seleucid kingdom in 175 b.c. From circumcision to Sabbath observance, many Jewish customs were outlawed. Opposition to Antiochus’s policies centered around Mattathias’s home in Modein, a town 17 miles northwest of Jerusalem. In 167 b.c. Antiochus desecrated the temple itself by erecting a statue of Zeus and sacrificing a pig. A guerrilla war ensued. In 164 b.c. Mattathias’s son, Judas Maccabeus, successfully recaptured Jerusalem and reconsecrated the temple. Judas’s brothers, Simon and Jonathan, continued the struggle against Syrian tyranny until 142 b.c. After that date, Israel remained practically independent until the Romans invaded Palestine in 63 b.c..

As is typical of apocalyptic literature, the book containing the vision is sealed until its contents become pertinent to the time at hand. Daniel would receive no further revelation on the matter, thus leaving his question unanswered. He—and those for whom the vision was recorded—had all of the information needed to persevere in righteousness through persecution. Faithlife Bible.

As Daniel stood beside the Tigris River, he saw three persons, one on each side of the river and one above the river. The two others refers to two angels, different from the ones Daniel had already seen. The man clothed in linen may be the preincarnate Christ. How long refers to the duration of the trials. Daniel was not asking when the events would begin. Daniel would die and be resurrected. NKJ Bible.

Daniel 12:9 And he said, “Go your way, Daniel, for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end.

Revelation 22:10 And he said to me, “Do not seal the words of the prophecy of this book, for the time is at hand.

Hosea 2:16–20

God will take what Satan meant to destroy us and our testimony and use it for our good and the good of the Body of Christ.

We are beloved children. We will be disciplined so that we can learn and grow in His ways.

Hosea 2:16–20

16 “And it shall be, in that day,”

Says the Lord,

“That you will call Me ‘My Husband,’

And no longer call Me ‘My Master,’

17 For I will take from her mouth the names of the Baals,

And they shall be remembered by their name no more.

18 In that day I will make a covenant for them

With the beasts of the field,

With the birds of the air,

And with the creeping things of the ground.

Bow and sword of battle I will shatter from the earth,

To make them lie down safely.

19 “I will betroth you to Me forever;

Yes, I will betroth you to Me

In righteousness and justice,

In lovingkindness and mercy;

20 I will betroth you to Me in faithfulness,

And you shall know the Lord.

The Hebrew text here for My husband can literally be rendered “my man.” In Hebrew, a woman’s husband can be described as her man.

The renewal of the covenant restores the relationship between Yahweh and Israel. Jeremiah takes this idea further, emphasizing the need for a completely new covenant.

The restoration is accompanied by total peace in the human and natural world. The four virtues listed in this verse, combined with the faithfulness mentioned in Hosea 2:20, form the essence of Yahweh’s character. Biblical writers frequently mention these virtues together. Faithlife Bible.

Israel would call the Lord her Husband, not her Master, because the latter title might have reminded the people of their former devotion to Baal. The word Baal can mean “Master. ”Betrothal was a binding commitment, the last step before the wedding and consummation.

The Lord emphasized that the new marriage between Himself and Israel would be permanent.

Lovingkindness means “devotion, commitment.” Israel would respond positively to the Lord’s love and acknowledge that He is her husband and benefactor. NKJ Bible.

From that time Israel would be more truly attached to the Lord; no longer calling him Baali, or “My lord and master,” alluding to authority, rather than love, but Ishi, an address of affection. This may foretell the restoration from the Babylonish captivity; and also be applied to the conversion of the Jews to Christ, in the days of the apostles, and the future general conversion of that nation; and believers are enabled to expect infinitely more tenderness and kindness from their holy God, than a beloved wife can expect from the kindest husband. When the people were weaned from idols, and loved the Lord, no creature should do them any harm. This may be understood of the blessings and privileges of the spiritual Israel, of every true believer, and their partaking of Christ’s righteousness; also, of the conversion of the Jews to Christ. Matthew Henry Commentary.

Leviticus 26:5 Your threshing shall last till the time of vintage, and the vintage shall last till the time of sowing; you shall eat your bread to the full, and dwell in your land safely.

Job 5:23 For you shall have a covenant with the stones of the field, and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with you.

Isaiah 11:6 “The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, the leopard shall lie down with the young goat, the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them.

Isaiah 11:7 The cow and the bear shall graze; their young ones shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.

Ezekiel 34:25 “I will make a covenant of peace with them, and cause wild beasts to cease from the land; and they will dwell safely in the wilderness and sleep in the woods.

Luke 1:76–80

Every child born has a talent God has given them. It is up to us to place our salvation in Jesus and allow Holy Spirit to hone those talents for His glory!

Some are called by God to a higher calling.

Luke 1:76–80

76 “And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Highest;

For you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways,

77 To give knowledge of salvation to His people

By the remission of their sins,

78 Through the tender mercy of our God,

With which the Dayspring from on high has visited us;

79 To give light to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death,

To guide our feet into the way of peace.”

80 So the child grew and became strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his manifestation to Israel.

This verse summarizes approximately 30 years in the life of John the Baptist. This detail sets up the quotation of Isaiah’s prophecy in 3:4–6. It also might be intended to evoke Israel’s wilderness wanderings after the exodus. Faithlife Bible.

Luke 3:4-6

4 as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, saying:

“The voice of one crying in the wilderness:

‘Prepare the way of the Lord;

Make His paths straight.

5 Every valley shall be filled

And every mountain and hill brought low;

The crooked places shall be made straight

And the rough ways smooth;

6 And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.’ ”

Finally able to speak, Zacharias proclaimed to those gathered what the angel had told him in the temple. John was to prepare the way for the Lord, a reference to his role as forerunner of the Messiah. John’s task was to prepare the people by informing them of their need to repent and of the One who was coming.

Dayspring is a reference to the coming of Messiah. This Greek word was also used to translate the Hebrew word for “branch” or “sprout,” a concept with messianic overtones. As the Dayspring or the “Rising Sun,” the Messiah will provide the light of truth and forgiveness to those blinded by the darkness of their sins.

Peace describes a harmonious relationship with God. NKJ Bible.

Zacharias uttered a prophecy concerning the kingdom and salvation of the Messiah. The gospel brings light with it; in it the day dawns. In John the Baptist it began to break, and increased apace to the perfect day. The gospel is discovering; it shows that about which we were utterly in the dark; it is to give light to those that sit in darkness, the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. It is reviving; it brings light to those that sit in the shadow of death, as condemned prisoners in the dungeon. It is directing; it is to guide our feet in the way of peace, into that way which will bring us to peace at last. John gave proofs of strong faith, vigorous and holy affections, and of being above the fear and love of the world. Thus he ripened for usefulness; but he lived a retired life, till he came forward openly as the forerunner of the Messiah.

Let us follow peace with all men, as well as seek peace with God and our own consciences. And if it be the will of God that we live unknown to the world, still let us diligently seek to grow strong in the grace of Jesus Christ. Matthew Henry Commentary.

Isaiah 9:2 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them a light has shined.

Isaiah 40:3 The voice of one crying in the wilderness: “Prepare the way of the LORD; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.

Jeremiah 31:34 No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, ‘Know the LORD,’ for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the LORD. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”

Malachi 3:1 “Behold, I send My messenger, and he will prepare the way before Me. And the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to His temple, even the Messenger of the covenant, in whom you delight. Behold, He is coming,”Says the LORD of hosts.

Matthew 11:9 But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet.

Psalm 79:8-10

Pray for our nation.

If God leads the way we will care for the poor, the oppressed and the foreigner among us. We will follow Micah 6:8  we will treat everyone fairly, we will be merciful and we will be humble knowing that it has nothing to do with our goodness but everything to do with Gods’.

Anything that we ask in the name of Jesus, in accordance with Scripture, is granted if only we ask forgiveness and trust God to bring it to pass.

If believers will humble themselves God will heal our land.

Psalm 79:8-10

8 Oh, do not remember former iniquities against us!

Let Your tender mercies come speedily to meet us,

For we have been brought very low.

9 Help us, O God of our salvation,

For the glory of Your name;

And deliver us, and provide atonement for our sins,

For Your name’s sake!

10 Why should the nations say,

“Where is their God?”

Let there be known among the nations in our sight

The avenging of the blood of Your servants which has been shed.

The psalmist depicts Israel’s suffering at the hands of foreigners as God’s judgment on their sins. He pleads for forgiveness. Israel will praise God after He rescues them. Then Israel’s proclamation of His goodness will strengthen His reputation. The psalmist asks that God not hold Israel’s sin against them. The psalmist pleads that God defend His reputation by delivering His people. There is a claim that Israel’s God is powerless. This mocking question is the substance of the taunts against Israel. Faithlife Bible.

The appeal is based on the character of God as expressed by His name. Another basis for the poet’s appeal is the international reputation of God. If God delivered the Israelites, His power would be demonstrated to all the nations. NKJ Bible.

Psalm 42:10 As with a breaking of my bones, my enemies reproach me, while they say to me all day long,“Where is your God?”

Isaiah 64:9 Do not be furious, O LORD, nor remember iniquity forever; Indeed, please look—we all are Your people!

Jeremiah 14:7 O LORD, though our iniquities testify against us, do it for Your name’s sake; for our backslidings are many, we have sinned against You.

Colossians 2:1–10

My two daughters and 7 grandchildren left for Hawaii yesterday. Thank you God for delivering them safely. I am so humbled and grateful for the family that  You have placed in my life!

We love because He first loved us.

in Christ, we can fulfill Gods’ command to love Him above all and others as ourselves!!

Colossians 1:19 For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell,

Colossians 2:1–10

2 For I want you to know what a great conflict I have for you and those in Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh, 2 that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, and attaining to all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the knowledge of the mystery of God, both of the Father and of Christ, 3 in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

4 Now this I say lest anyone should deceive you with persuasive words. 5 For though I am absent in the flesh, yet I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your good order and the steadfastness of your faith in Christ.

6 As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, 7 rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.

8 Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ. 9 For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; 10 and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power.

Paul begins this chapter by assuring the Colossians that Christ reveals the full truth of God.

In mystery cults,  a mystery was a secret ritual that supposedly established a relationship with a god and resulted in perceived benefits such as immortality. The Colossians likely knew of such teachings from their culture. Paul uses the term “mystery” to refer to Christ, who reveals and fulfills God’s plan of salvation. Jewish traditions prized wisdom,  and mystery cults valued knowledge. Paul affirms Christ as the true source of both. Since the believers of Colossae have Christ, they have no need for the wisdom and knowledge offered by false teachers.

Ancient philosophers used lofty arguments to persuade their audiences. Paul warns the Colossians that such teachings may appear logical, but their conclusions are false.

Because Christ represents the full revelation of God, and because believers are united with Christ, the Colossians can be confident of their salvation and the defeat of worldly powers.

The Greek word used here, paralambanō, can refer to the reception of a tradition —in this case, the message of the gospel handed down from the apostles. Paul urges the Colossians to continue in this tradition, which contrasts with the human traditions of false teachers.

The fundamental problem Paul identifies is that human rules and traditions are being recommended as necessary supplements to Christ. However, it is also possible that Paul is not correcting a particular false teaching. Instead, Paul could be concerned with the immaturity and ignorance of the Colossian believers.

The Greek word for philosophy,  philosophia, literally means “love of wisdom.” Philosophy originated in Greece during the sixth century bc as the systematic and logical investigation of a subject. By the first century, “philosophy” broadly referred to any moral or religious belief system. The Jewish historian Josephus applied the term to the various Jewish groups—the Pharisees, Sadducees, and Essenes. Paul encountered two schools of philosophy in his travels—the Epicureans and the Stoics. In contrast, the gospel message has its origin in God. The very nature of God is fully present in Christ. False teachers may have asserted that Christ was one of many divine beings or that God’s fullness was distributed throughout supernatural beings, not just Christ—claims that Paul rejects. Faithlife Bible.

Though the false teachers at Colosse spoke of initiating people into a superior knowledge, Paul tells his readers that they can understand the mystery of God without this false philosophy. The Gnostics sought knowledge as an end in itself, but Paul reminds the Colossians that true knowledge will demonstrate itself by bringing people together in Christian love in the church. Note how Paul joins the Father and Christ together, emphasizing their common deity and unity. The Gnostics would view Jesus only as an emanation from the Father, sharing a portion of the attributes of deity. Paul not only emphasizes Jesus’ deity, but also explains that He possesses all wisdom and knowledge. The Gnostics thought only certain “knowledgeable” people could join their elite group; Paul teaches that every believer has access to complete wisdom found in Christ.

Just as the Colossian believers had begun with Christ, so Paul encourages them to continue in their walk with Him. Paul uses four words to describe the Colossians’ walk with Christ. The tense of the word translated rooted denotes a complete action; the believers have been rooted in Christ. The next three words, built up, established, and abounding, are in the present tense, showing the continual growth that should characterize every Christian’s walk with Christ.

This verse has been used at times to teach that Christians should not study or read philosophy. This is not Paul’s meaning. Paul himself was adept at philosophy, evidenced by his interaction with the Stoic and Epicurean philosophers in Athens. Paul was warning the believers not to be taken in by any philosophy that does not conform to a proper knowledge of Christ. The false teachers at Colosse had combined worldly philosophies with the gospel. These philosophies are spoken of by Paul as the basic principles of the world, which some have interpreted as “spirits” or “angels” who supposedly control a person’s life. It seems more likely that the term principles refers to the elementary rules and regulations that certain teachers were seeking to impose on believers according to the dictates of human philosophies. Paul’s strongest indictment against the heretics was that their teaching was not according to Christ, and thus they were not walking with Christ.

Paul clearly proclaims the Incarnation, the fact the God became a man bodily. This contradicts the Gnostic idea of the inherent evil of physical bodies and the claim that Jesus is merely a spirit. The Gnostics thought the fullness of God had been divided among a number of angelic beings, the last creating the material world. In contrast, Paul says that the fullness of God exists in Christ.

Paul illustrates the adequacy of Christ by demonstrating how the Colossian believers are complete. In Christ, the Colossians have put off the power of sin and the flesh, have received new life, have been forgiven, have been delivered from requirements laid down by human traditions, and have been freed from the powers of spirit beings. There is nothing that the Christian needs to add to what was received in Christ at the time of conversion. Paul emphasizes the sufficiency of Christ in order to refute the Gnostics and the Judaizers who respectively believed that special knowledge or works were necessary to make a Christian complete. NKJ Bible.

By this one word “complete,” is shown that we have in Christ whatever is required. “In him,” not when we look to Christ, as though he were distant from us, but we are in him, when, by the power of the Spirit, we have faith wrought in our hearts by the Spirit, and we are united to our Head. The circumcision of the heart, the crucifixion of the flesh, the death and burial to sin and to the world, and the resurrection to newness of life, set forth in baptism, and by faith wrought in our hearts, prove that our sins are forgiven, and that we are fully delivered from the curse of the law. Through Christ, we, who were dead in sins, are quickened. Christ’s death was the death of our sins; Christ’s resurrection is the quickening of our souls. Matthew Henry Commentary.

Hebrews 7:11–19

Thank You Father for the New Covenant purchased by the perfect sacrifice of Your only begotten Son, our Redeemer King, Jesus.

In and through Jesus we have reconciliation with You. In and through Him we have access to Holy Spirit who will teach us Your ways and safely deliver us into our forever home!

Christ within is our only hope of Gods’ glory.

Hebrews 7:11–19

11 Therefore, if perfection were through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people received the law), what further need was there that another priest should rise according to the order of Melchizedek, and not be called according to the order of Aaron? 12 For the priesthood being changed, of necessity there is also a change of the law. 13 For He of whom these things are spoken belongs to another tribe, from which no man has officiated at the altar.

14 For it is evident that our Lord arose from Judah, of which tribe Moses spoke nothing concerning priesthood. 15 And it is yet far more evident if, in the likeness of Melchizedek, there arises another priest 16 who has come, not according to the law of a fleshly commandment, but according to the power of an endless life.

17 For He testifies:

“You are a priest forever

According to the order of Melchizedek.”

18 For on the one hand there is an annulling of the former commandment because of its weakness and unprofitableness, 19 for the law made nothing perfect; on the other hand, there is the bringing in of a better hope, through which we draw near to God.

If the Levitical priesthood had been able to bring people to perfection, then a superior priest from the order of Melchizedek would not have been needed. If the priests under the Law of Moses could offer permanent reconciliation between God and His people, there would be no need for a coming Messiah, One who would restore the Israelites to their relationship with God.

Change means “removal”. If the Melchizedek priesthood removed the Levitical priesthood, then the Mosaic Law is also removed. In short, the believer is not under the Law but instead relies on the righteousness of Christ. He of whom these things are spoken is the Lord, who arose from another tribe, namely Judah. According to the Law, the tribe of Judah had nothing to do with the priesthood. If the OT said that another priest was coming from another tribe, then clearly the Law was going to be superseded.

The law, which regulated the priesthood, was fleshly in the sense that it regulated a person’s external actions. The Lord, however, is a Priest according to the power of an endless life. Jesus is a different kind of Priest, another indication that the Law has been changed. There has been an annulling, a putting away, of the Law. NKJ Bible.

The Greek word used here, teleiōsis, for perfection, refers to the qualifications required to draw near to God. The author of Hebrews denies the Levitical system’s ability to produce perfection. God established it as a means for His people to maintain relationship with Him. The Order of Melchizedek Replaces the Order of Aaron. Jesus, who like Melchizedek did not belong to the lineage of Levi and Aaron.

The law was a temporary provision given to God’s people until the arrival of Christ. Since the law was maintained by the Levitical priesthood, it must change now that a superior priest (Jesus) has arrived. Jesus belonged to the tribe of Judah, not Levi. Judah had no role in the religious activities of the tabernacle or temple. The Israelite kings from Judah, David and Solomon, may have provided precedent for someone from Judah to serve at the altar. That is, served as a priest. Jesus defeated death through His resurrection. His priesthood, like Melchizedek’s, endures forever. The priestly functions of the OT are no longer necessary because of Jesus’ priestly work. The greek term Athetēsis refers to the annulment or cancellation of something—in this case the former commandment. The author of Hebrews reasons that God has the right to annul what He has instituted. Faithlife Bible.

The better covenant, of which Jesus was the Surety, is not here contrasted with the covenant of works, by which every transgressor is shut up under the curse. It is distinguished from the Sinai covenant with Israel, and the legal dispensation under which the church so long remained. The better covenant brought the church and every believer into clearer light, more perfect liberty, and more abundant privileges. In the order of Aaron there was a multitude of priests, of high priests one after another; but in the priesthood of Christ there is only one and the same. This is the believer’s safety and happiness, that this everlasting High Priest is able to save to the uttermost, in all times, in all cases. Matthew Henry Commentary.
