1 Corinthians 5:9-13

Ephesians 5:11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them.

It is impossible to live in the world and not be affected by it. We need to be selective in those we keep company with who call themselves believers. The world will be judged by God it is not in our job description. The Word of God keeps cleansing us in the truth of Jesus Christ.

1 Corinthians 5:9-13 I wrote to you in my epistle not to keep company with sexually immoral people. Yet I certainly did not mean with the sexually immoral people of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world. But now I have written to you not to keep company with anyone named a brother, who is sexually immoral, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner—not even to eat with such a person.

For what have I to do with judging those also who are outside? Do you not judge those who are inside? But those who are outside God judges. Therefore “put away from yourselves the evil person.”

In the letter probably refers to a previous letter that Paul wrote to the Corinthians. Paul is not referring to the sexually immoral people of the world (his mission field), but to those who call themselves Christians and participate in sexual immorality. He views such people as dangerous to the overall health of the congregation since they may entice others to follow them in sin. Paul may be referring either to meals in the church community or to all meals in general, even those between individuals. In Paul’s time, sharing a meal communicated that the participants shared values. Paul does not want shared meals to implicitly express approval for the man’s immorality). Faithlife Study Bible

My epistle refers to an earlier letter from Paul to the Corinthians that no longer survives. Christians are called to influence the world, not run away from it. They are agents of God to carry the light of Jesus Christ into a dark world. Eating together is a key part of fellowship and closeness with others. The Corinthians were not to have fellowship with those who claimed to be Christians but whose lives were dominated by sin.

God judges: The church’s responsibility is to discipline its members while trusting the Lord to judge the world. The NKJV Study Bible

2 Thessalonians 3:6 But we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you withdraw from every brother who walks disorderly and not according to the tradition which he received from us.

Resting in God is not just about living in a certain location, like the promised land or even our future heavenly home. It is about abiding in Him. Rest indicates relationship. And through faith in Christ, we have a relationship with God where He is available to us always, no matter what happens around us. Those who are in Christ enter God's rest today(Hebrews 4:7), which enables us to rise above suffering in this life and look ahead to the complete fulfillment of God's rest in eternity.

Hebrews 4:5-6 reminds us that hearing and knowing about God's rest is not the same as entering the rest God provides. Thankfully, those who choose to accept the free gift of salvation in Christ find rest and peace unlike anything this world can offer. First5
