Matthew 26:40-41

Inside us resides the Holy Spirit of God. When we accept the salvation of the Cross in Jesus it ignites the powerful flame of His Spirit in us to guide us into all truth. When we give ourselves to Him totally He is strong to do the works of the Father. When we allow our life to get entangled in our own choices and our own abilities He is weakened. His power through our submission to God’s will is able to overcome our human temptations.

God gives good gifts to all men to survive but few will give Him credit for these abilities. Only in salvation do we give God the glory due Him. He needs to be involved in and consulted in every area of our life for His will to be accomplished in us for our good and the good of His Church, the Body of Christ.

prayer |pre(ə)r|
noun
a solemn request for help or expression of thanks addressed  to God.
• (prayers) a religious service, especially a regular one, at which people gather in order to pray together.
• an earnest hope or wish

Our prayer life is a lifeline to the power over temptation of the Triune Godhead to make us doers and not just hearers of the Word of God made flesh.

The disciples needed to stay awake and pray because they were about to be tested themselves. Here the word flesh emphasizes human weakness. The contrast between the weakness of the disciples and the strength of the Lord is startling. Because the flesh is weak, every child of God needs supernatural empowerment.

Matthew 26:40-41

40 Then He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “What! Could you not watch with Me one hour? 41 Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

38 Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
Mark 14:38

40 When He came to the place, He said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.”
Luke 22:40

18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints—
Ephesians 6:18

15 For what I am doing, I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do.
Romans 7:15

17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.
Galatians 5:17
